"Cris Powell is a gifted, sensitive analyst
whose clinical work during the period of my
supervising her has always been of the highest quality."
- George Atwood, Ph.D.
I provide counseling, psychotherapy, and contemporary psychoanalysis to adults and couples, and children, adolescents, and families. For eighteen years I specialized with teens and their families, and provided workshops for mental health professionals and childcare providers. Sometimes teens and parents appreciate the help of an interpreter who can build a bridge between their different perspectives and facilitate understanding. I enjoy coaching parents, helping to work out school issues, and bringing out the best in kids and families.
"Dr. Powell understands that a teenager's anger comes from an instinct of self-protection.
Like the fabled animal-whisperer, she is able to maintain a therapeutic distance, not too close and not too far, and wait patiently.
In the twenty years I have known Cris Powell, as a student and as a colleague,
she has become one of my most valued teachers." - Sanford Shapiro, M.D.
"Cris can make connection to teenagers in an almost magical way, eliciting their trust,
and enabling them to flourish. She has a deep understanding of the adolescent psyche." - Mother of two teens
Since 1995, I've maintained a private practice in San Diego where I see a diverse range of adults, couples, and families, including many LGBT couples and families. As an artist and writer, I enjoy working with other artists to facilitate the creative process and remove blocks to creativity. I also enjoy working with spiritual issues, and I see a number of people who are recovering from negative experiences with religion or previous therapies.

A good therapist is a teachable therapist. As we get to know one another, I will welcome your feedback about your preferences, and we will learn how you can best make use of our relationship to meet your emerging needs. I've worked hard over the years to develop a wide range of skills and techniques. You can choose those that feel like the best fit for you.
"Dr. Powell has literally changed our lives. We had tried other therapists, but they were no help. Now that we understand our daughter has been suffering from PTSD, we are able to give her the help and support she needs to succeed at school, and get back to her happy, playful former self at home. Dr. P will always be part of our family."
"Dr. Powell is a natural healer, with the creativity, compassion, and keen intelligence to make therapy a worthwhile adventure."
